The greyhound racing industry has admitted to killing up to 17,000 healthy dogs a year. 7,000 pups and young dogs never even make it to the track, and thousands of dogs 'retired' from racing will die because they are too slow to win. They use live rabbits, possums, and piglets for the dogs to chase to make them train. Trainers have also been known for having the live bait on a leash to taunt the dogs before letting the dogs eventually maul the live baits. Greyhounds have very large risk of sustaining serious injuries such as broken legs or head trauma. Up to 200 dogs are reported injured during races each week. Greyhounds are often drugged with banned substances to enhance their performance. This is a serious animal welfare issue as drugs can have bad psychological and physical effects on greyhounds.
