I am a student who has been directly impacted by the invasive nature of GoGuardian, an app used in schools across the nation. This tool, while marketed as a way to enhance education and maintain student focus, is infringing on our right to privacy. It allows teachers and administrators to monitor our online activity during school hours without any form of consent or transparency.

The issue extends beyond just me. According to the National Education Policy Center, there are serious concerns about how educational technology can infringe upon students' privacy rights (NEPC, 2020). The report states that "the use of ed tech raises far-reaching issues concerning student privacy" and that "many ed tech products do not meet basic standards for protecting student data".

GoGuardian's control over what we see and do online is not only invasive but also unnecessary. There are other ways to ensure students stay focused without breaching their personal space digitally.
