Ban Glyphosate Use in North Bergen, New Jersey
The Issue
We, the residents of North Bergen, call on the Township of North Bergen to immediately ban the use of glyphosate‑based herbicides (including Roundup) on all municipal properties, parks, schools, playgrounds, athletic fields, and public landscaping. North Bergen is one of the most densely populated towns in the United States. Thousands of children, families, seniors, and pets use our parks and public spaces every single day. Glyphosate — the most widely used herbicide in the country — has been detected in food, soil, water, and even human urine samples. Scientific bodies worldwide have raised concerns about its links to cancer, endocrine disruption, soil degradation, and harm to pollinators. While federal agencies continue to allow glyphosate, local governments across the U.S. have already enacted bans to protect their residents. Town‑level bans are legal, effective, and proven. North Bergen has a responsibility to protect its community — especially in a region with environmental justice concerns, heavy traffic pollution, and runoff flowing directly into the Meadowlands and Hudson River watershed. Chemical exposure in public spaces is unnecessary and avoidable. Safer alternatives already exist and are being used successfully in municipalities nationwide. We demand that North Bergen adopt a local ordinance that: Prohibits the use of glyphosate and glyphosate‑based herbicides on all town‑managed land.Requires safer, non‑toxic weed management alternatives such as mechanical removal, organic herbicides, and ecological landscaping. Publishes transparent public reporting of all pesticide use by municipal departments. Protects children, pets, wildlife, and pollinators from unnecessary chemical exposure. North Bergen has the authority — and the obligation — to act. We urge the Mayor, Town Council, and Department of Public Works to implement a full municipal ban on glyphosate and make North Bergen a safer, healthier community. We, the undersigned, call for immediate action.
