Ban Gas Tax Giveaways That Let Big Oil Raise Ohio Prices Anyway
The Issue
24 DAYS! THAT'S HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR OHIO'S GAS TAX RELIEF TO BECOME A JOKE!
On October 1, 2026, Governor Mike DeWine signed legislation suspending Ohio's 38.5-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax for 90 days, just weeks before the November election.
Ohio's average gasoline price was approximately $4.20 per gallon when he signed it.
By October 24, gasoline averaged approximately $4.42 per gallon.
THINK ABOUT THAT!
Ohio drivers were paying approximately 22 cents MORE per gallon than they were when the governor signed his celebrated tax holiday!
The savings that politicians were advertising had already been overwhelmed by rising gasoline prices.
I believe this was election-year political theater. Republican leaders promoted a temporary tax cut as relief for working families, but the timing raised serious questions for me about whether helping drivers or winning votes was the bigger priority.
Meanwhile, Ohio workers still have to commute to their jobs. Parents still have to pick up their children from school. Small businesses still have to cover delivery expenses. And families already stretched thin are still paying the price.
And here's something else I want Governor DeWine to explain.
I DRIVE AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE, AND OHIO CHARGES ME AN EXTRA $200 EVERY YEAR BECAUSE I'M NOT PAYING GASOLINE TAXES!
If Ohio can suspend gasoline taxes, why can't it consider reducing the additional fees imposed on electric vehicle owners?
Where is the fairness in that?
And now that the election is over, why not publicly examine extending the gasoline tax holiday beyond January 2 if prices remain painfully high?
GOVERNOR DEWINE AND THE OHIO LEGISLATURE, OHIO DRIVERS DESERVE ANSWERS!
Investigate whether oil companies and gasoline retailers are complying with the law requiring tax savings to reach consumers. Release the findings. Explain the rising prices. And tell Ohio taxpayers whether additional relief is possible.
Ohio drivers are tired of being used. We are tired of politicians acting like they saved us money while the cost of living continues climbing.
We deserve to know whether the relief promised to us actually reached our pockets.
OHIO TAXPAYERS ARE TIRED OF POLITICAL GAMES. WE WANT ACCOUNTABILITY, NOT ANOTHER ELECTION-YEAR HEADLINE!
