The Issue

I, as a victim of gun violence and someone suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), am deeply concerned about the unrestricted sale and use of fireworks in our communities. This petition aims to address the negative impact fireworks have on individuals with PTSD, children, adults, and animals alike.

Personal Story:
As a survivor of gun violence, I know firsthand the devastating effects that loud noises can have on one's mental well-being. Every year during celebratory occasions or holidays, my sleep is disrupted by the constant igniting of fireworks that resemble mini bombs. The loud explosions trigger traumatic memories and exacerbate my PTSD symptoms, leaving me in a state of constant fear.

Fireworks not only affect individuals like myself but also disturb children who are unable to comprehend their purpose or potential dangers. The sudden bursts of light and sound can be frightening for them, leading to anxiety and distress. Additionally, adults with anxiety disorders or sensory sensitivities may also suffer from heightened stress levels due to these explosive displays.

Moreover, it is crucial to acknowledge the impact on animals within our communities. Domestic animals often experience extreme fear during firework displays due to their acute hearing abilities. The loud noises cause them immense distress and can lead to panic attacks or even injuries as they attempt to escape from perceived danger.

Facts & Statistics:
1) According to a study published in JAMA Psychiatry in 2017 (source: American Medical Association), exposure to fireworks has been linked with increased symptoms of PTSD among veterans.
2) A survey conducted by PetMD revealed that animal shelters report an increase in lost pets during periods when fireworks are commonly used.
3) The National Fire Protection Association reported an average of 18,500 fires per year caused by fireworks between 2009-2018 (source: NFPA.org).

By banning the sale of fireworks for personal entertainment purposes, we can protect the well-being of our communities and ensure a safer environment for all. This petition seeks to urge local authorities and lawmakers to take action in implementing stricter regulations on fireworks usage, limiting them to professional displays only.

Let us come together and stand against the unnecessary distress caused by fireworks. Sign this petition today to support a ban on the sale of fireworks to citizens who may mishandle their use, ultimately safeguarding individuals with PTSD, children, adults, and animals from unnecessary fear and harm.

Thank you for your support in making our communities safer and more inclusive for everyone.
