The Issue

Every year, the tranquility of our Lakewood community is shattered by the incessant noise of fireworks, starting as early as 6 PM. The once peaceful neighborhood transforms into what feels like a war zone. This constant barrage not only disturbs the peace but also takes a significant toll on the well-being of residents and pets alike.

In my home, the effects are deeply felt. My dog, usually calm and composed, has been having panic attacks, visibly shaking and distressed from the overwhelming noise. It’s heart-wrenching to watch her cower in fear, unable to comprehend the source of the sound. My elderly parents, who deserve serenity in their golden years, sit uncomfortable and agitated. For many, including myself, these endless explosions prevent us from relaxing or celebrating with joy for our freedom as Americans.

It's not just our family that suffers. Many neighbors have confided in me that they share similar struggles. The stress and anxiety caused by fireworks are exacerbated for individuals with PTSD, many of whom have served our country and deserve to find peace at home. Studies have shown that fireworks lead to heightened stress levels, sleep disturbances, and can even cause physical harm.

Fireworks are already banned in several cities across Washington State, acknowledging the disturbance and danger they pose. It is time for Lakewood to follow suit and prioritize the well-being of its residents. We propose a complete ban on fireworks, except for professionally managed displays during city-approved events. This would significantly reduce the chaos during key festivities while still allowing for communal celebrations.

Join us in advocating for a safer, quieter Lakewood. Let’s ensure that our community is a place where everyone can enjoy peace and security in their own homes. Please sign this petition to urge our city officials to take swift action and ban the use of fireworks in Lakewood, WA.
