As Independence Day approaches, many of us in Doral look forward to celebrating with family and friends. However, this year poses an unusual challenge for our community. Following a week of devastating wildfires in the Everglades, our air quality has significantly deteriorated, posing a health threat to our residents.

Fireworks, though a traditional part of July 4th celebrations, emit particulate matter and toxic substances that can linger in the air long after the festivities end. These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs, exacerbating respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD, and posing severe health risks, especially for children, older adults, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), fireworks contribute to significant short-term air pollution spikes. In light of the current air quality crisis, the addition of fireworks could tip conditions to dangerous levels, with serious implications for public health.

We are not asking to end the tradition permanently, but rather to make a responsible choice given the current environmental conditions. By temporarily prohibiting the use of consumer fireworks this July 4th, the City of Doral will demonstrate its commitment to protecting the health and safety of its residents.

We urge the City Council to take decisive action and prioritize the wellbeing of our community. The time is now to act responsibly and protect our environment and health.
