Combate Veterans and those who worked in combat zones can pair threat with whatever was in that environment, including things they saw, heard or smelled. These pairings can continue after returning to civilian life. So, when fireworks or other loud noises occur, a Veteran's brain can feel in danger.

 

 

 

 

Animals also struggle with fireworks, as they can’t make sense of firework noises as they are not only extremely loud but also unpredictable. They associate such noises with danger, and all their instincts tell them to run to a place of safety. And to animals, the flashes of light produces by fireworks seem just as threatening as the noises.

 

 

 

There are much better ways to celebrate the New Year, or 4th of July without traumatizing your neighbors, and their pets.
