The Issue

Shelters across the United States continue to kill healthy shelter animals at an alarming rate (1 million) each year due to the lack of space.  52% of the shelters across the US are kill shelters.

According to The Humane Society only 29 states have established partial or full bans on the use of GAS CHAMBERS as a method of killing in animal shelters. Missouri and Wyoming continue to practice this inhumane method to this day.

The shelter animals being killed are not only healthy but some of them are neutered or spayed at the shelter yet killed within 3-5 days of the surgery. It is unimaginable to think how tax payers dollars are being misappropriated for these surgeries without giving enough time for these pets to be adopted. One of the shelters in Houston, BARC, spayed a full term pregnant dog and took out 24 pounds of puppies, only to euthanize her 3 days later (televised on Fox 26 Houston).

While shelters are overwhelmed the US continues to take on more pets from around the world - China, Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico, etc. The shelters don’t wait to get the current animals fostered or adopted so euthanasia is their way to make space for more. The status on these shelter animals is not broadly shared  to give them a better chance at finding their forever home.

As America prepares to celebrate the 4th of July each year, shelters kill their existing resident animals to prepare for the next group of lost and dumped ones.

This petition is for government officials to look at the shelters in CA, TX, FL, NC, GA, TN, and many others where animals are being killed for the lack of space.

Please sign the following petition to reform the current animal shelter practices:

  1. All shelters adopt a “NO KILL” policy.
  2. More funding is allocated to help with shelter overcrowding and adoption.
  3. Mandate neutering/spaying.
  4. Create stricter laws for retail pet stores that sells dogs. It should be required for pet stores to obtain dogs only from public animal control agencies, shelters, or rescue groups.
  5. Regulate dog breeders and wage heavy penalties for those that use their animals as puppy machines that are discarded when they can no longer reproduce. (https://tinyurl.com/DogsSupplyandDemand
  6. When possible retrain/rehabilitate abandoned pets to be a part of society (K-9 units in police or fire stations all over US and as comfort/medical alert animals in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, schools, etc.see: https://tinyurl.com/WhySaveOurBestFriends )
  7. Change laws against dumping, abuse, neglect towards animals.

This is a call to action on this Independence Day to show your support towards these helpless, beautiful animals that share this world with us.

Thank you for taking the time to make your voice heard
