The Issue

For over two decades as a Certified Veterinary Technician, I've had the unfortunate opportunity to witness countless declawing surgeries on cats.  It is a procedure fundamentally rooted in cruelty and unfairness, drastically altering the cat's classic mechanics and quality of life.  Having observed these surgeries firsthand, the myriad of post-operative complications that ensue are genuinely distressing.  Our feline companions endure unnecessary suffering due to a practice that prioritizes convenience over compassion.

Declawing a cat isn't a simple nail trim. It involves severing the last bone of each claw, akin to amputating a human fingertip at the last knuckle.  This surgery often leads to chronic pain, behavioral issues, and significant changes in gait, affecting the cat's balance and causing long-term physical and psychological trauma.  Statistics from veterinary studies indicate significant rates of complications such as infections, reopening of wounds, and even bone regrowth that can cause immense pain.

Countries and states around the world have recognized the brutality of elective declawing and have prohibited it. In the U.S., the states of New York and Maryland have enacted bans, showing that it is possible to advance compassionate animal welfare legislation.  Our beloved pets deserve the same protections.

There are numerous humane alternatives to manage cat scratching, including nail caps, regular trimming, and providing appropriate scratching posts to redirect their natural behavior.  Solutions that align with the health and well-being of these animals while addressing their owners' concerns do indeed exist.

Elective declawing, when not medically necessary, is an outdated and brutal practice that should find no place in a compassionate society.  We must advocate for laws in Florida to mirror those successfully implemented in other states and regions.

Help us protect our feline friends from unnecessary suffering and cruelty.  Sign this petition to ban elective cat declawing in Florida unless there is a medical necessity.  Together, we can ensure that Florida is a state that leads with kindness and compassion towards its animal inhabitants.  Please add your signature to support this crucial cause.
