Ban e-scooters for public safety in Vancouver
The Issue
Over the last 24+ months, Vancouver has been overshadowed by a growing concern for safety, both mine and that of fellow pedestrians. The rise of e-scooters, zipping past at alarming speeds on crowded sidewalks, has transformed our once safe and serene public spaces into chaotic and unpredictable environments. We have witnessed near misses, abrupt brake slams, and even accidents, prompting us to ask: is the convenience of e-scooters worth jeopardizing public safety?
E-scooters have surged in popularity across cities worldwide, offering an environmentally friendly mode of transport. However, this rapid adoption has outpaced the establishment of comprehensive safety regulations that are not enforced despite repeated requests. According to Transport Canada, e-scooter-related injuries have increased significantly over the past two years in urban areas like Vancouver. Evidence from local hospitals corroborates this, reporting a steady rise in injuries ranging from bruises and fractures to more severe head traumas and fatalities.
The enforcement of existing regulations is non-existent. Riders frequently disregard rules about speed limits and designated riding zones, often using sidewalks and pedestrian areas illegally. Every day, we have witnessed children riding, riding double, riding with no helmet, riding with headphones, riding faster the 25km/hr, etc. This non- enforcement poses a direct threat not only to pedestrians but also to the riders themselves, who are at risk of serious injury due to the unpredictable nature of urban traffic.
The B.C. Ministry of Transport began a 5 year E-scooter pilot program and not even halfway through it is fact that it is a dismal failure and needs to end now.
Other cities around the world such as Montreal, Toronto, Paris, Madrid, Brussels, London UK, have already taken steps to end the reckless use of e-scooters by implementing complete bans . These measures have been extremely effective in reducing accidents and increasing public safety. Therefore, we demand the City of Vancouver to follow suit and impose a complete ban on e-scooters.
Our city's commitment to sustainable transport should not come at the expense of public safety. We demand the City of Vancouver to prioritize the well-being of its citizens and act responsibly by banning e-scooters.
