The Issue

In our city, many of us are struggling to make ends meet as the cost of living continues to rise. Recently, we found ourselves facing yet another challenge: dynamic pricing. This practice, used by ride-hailing services, airlines, and even retail stores, automatically adjusts prices based on demand, often leading to exorbitant costs during peak times. This isn't just unfair; it's pricing many of us out of essential services and goods, making everyday life even more unaffordable.

Dynamic pricing might be advantageous for corporations, increasing their profit margins, but for average citizens, it feels like price gouging. For example, during peak hours, ridesharing service costs can surge up to three times the normal rate. This means that those who need transportation the most, like those without personal vehicles or with medical appointments, are forced to pay these inflated prices.

Moreover, the lack of regulation around this pricing strategy leaves consumers vulnerable. A recent study by the Consumer Institute found that 76% of people had experienced significant price spikes in their day-to-day purchases due to dynamic pricing. This is a clear indication that the system is broken and in need of reform.

We propose that our city council take action to ban dynamic pricing within our jurisdiction. By implementing regulation, we can ensure fair pricing for all citizens, regardless of the time of purchase or demand levels. This would create a more equitable environment and prevent businesses from taking advantage of those who can least afford it.

We urge local authorities to consider the negative impact of dynamic pricing on our community and take meaningful steps to curtail this practice. Join us in demanding a fairer pricing system by signing this petition. Together, we can push for a change that will benefit everyone in our city. Sign now to support our cause.
