Delta-8-THC, a psychoactive compound derived from hemp, is fueling a mental health crisis, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Studies show up to 14% of teens in the South have used delta-8-THC, which has been linked to anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, psychosis, and even death. Adolescents’ developing brains make them four to seven times more likely to develop substance use disorders.

I’ve seen firsthand how devastating delta-8-THC can be. My son suffered psychosis from using it, and I know others who have experienced similar crises. Tragically, some children have even died from accidental overdoses. Even adults who legally use delta-8 are experiencing severe mental health effects.

In July 2024, Tennessee lawmakers tried to ban delta-8-THC, but manufacturers and small businesses profiting from its sales fought back. Instead of a ban, the state implemented weak regulations, such as requiring buyers to be 21, prohibiting sales near schools, and mandating licenses. Despite this, smoke shops still sell to underage kids, and even legal sales continue to harm those of age.

With its widespread accessibility, harmful effects, and the failure of regulations to protect vulnerable populations, Tennessee must take stronger action. A full ban on delta-8-THC is necessary to safeguard our communities.
