With enough support, we can end the corruption within this establishment and give back to our communities by helping families in need find reasonably priced commodities, that when donated, we’re meant to help all.

      As a single mom I often shop at Value Village in Surrey B.C. because prices are more reasonable for me to afford housewares and clothing for for the 3 of us. I’m very cautious of entering this particular store, because of a customer named Darren who is very aggressive. Darren often yells, swears, harasses and intimidates us, including my children and other customers.

Darren is a large scale reseller, who uses intimidation, politics, gifts and influence to infiltrate staff and meet his agenda, ultimately acquiring the bulk of all underpriced stock this store has to offer. These “in demand” items which sell themselves “with or without him on the premises” are then resold for enormous margins with no regards to underprivileged families. Under no circumstances, am I allowed to purchase any quality clothing or housewares before Darren decides what he chooses first, and without feeling threatened, charged & ran over by his shopping cart, ridiculed, called names and verbally abused. Darren has a large portion of staff under his thumb, he does what he wants, when he wants without repercussions, even if it means ripping items out of customers hands including my children’s, with no regard for anyone but himself. Do employees and management condone this behaviour? are they aiding and abetting him? Darren spends more than 10 hours a day ( 365 days a year ) in this store, robbing less fortunate families of more reasonably priced housewares, clothing and shoes. Running amuck, chasing down clothing racks and carts full of items, while management turns a blind eye, allowing him to stand guard for countless hours daily. Darren spends approximately 50% more time in-store than full time employees do, this ensures no individual but himself including children get an underpriced purchase that instead suits his own needs. I’ve never in my entire life seen a single individual so ruthlessly capable of running out large volumes of customers, never to return again. It appears employees disregard these complaints because Darren buys them gift cards, food and alcoholic beverages after work on occasion. Due to these “gifts” employees are expected to give large amounts of 20% off coupons for otherwise rag out donations - Covertly direct employees to underprice items suited for this individuals large scale operation - Saving these items in the warehouse for him, hours at a time, then have staff conveniently drop them within eyesight or hand off product when the coast is relatively clear. Additionally giving him a 30% senior discount on Tuesdays, on already grossly discounted product that’s been custom tailored for his price threshold.

To further the above, he regularly and fraudulently scans cheaper barcodes than priced, and often hides smaller items amongst or in boxes so staff will miss scanning them, inadvertently not paying for them and alternatively stealing them while his pockets are already full

Dozens, if not hundreds of complaints, including alleged assaults, have been filed and logged from countless customers over the past 10 years, mostly Langley and Newton Value Village, unfortunately without resolution. This has creating an enormous paper trail which often ties up H/O resources. A 3 month ban in Langley was previously in effect “Punishment fit for an infant considering the wide spread corruption that follows this individual around” H/O has been warned repeatedly and there is a high probability, they will be unwillingly dragged into a court room and found partially responsible if this individual decides to recklessly run someone over again. 

We must stop this corruption and ban Darren for good. Thrift stores were created to help the less fortunate make life a little easier by offering a cheaper alternative to quality clothing and housewares for widespread families in need, inadvertently affording to put more food on the table for all of us. Not for 1 individual to destroy this concept, and infiltrate these establishments because of self entitlement driven by greed and capitalism. By signing this petition we’re sending a clear signal to Value Village, that we would like change immediately.
