BAN DANGEROUS ROPE DOG TOYS: JUSTICE FOR CANE AND PROTECT OUR PETS
The Issue
Hundreds of owners are coming forward. Dogs have died, others have suffered terrifying near misses, and we need answers. How many more pets must suffer before action is taken?
My beloved dog Cane was only five years old when his life was tragically cut short following an incident involving a rope dog toy purchased through Amazon.
Cane swallowed part of the toy, and veterinary evidence reportedly links the material to a fatal intestinal blockage. He needed emergency surgery, but despite arriving at the vets at around 5–6 pm, his operation did not take place until approximately midnight. I have serious concerns about the delay in treatment and the care he received, and I believe these circumstances deserve a thorough investigation.
Our family has been left heartbroken. Cane was not just a dog. He was family, and we will never get him back.
But since sharing Cane’s story with the news, something deeply concerning has happened.
Hundreds of dog owners have contacted us, sharing experiences of losing their beloved pets in similar circumstances or coming frighteningly close to losing them after incidents involving rope toys.
Their stories cannot simply be ignored. These reports deserve to be investigated, and the risks need to be properly assessed before more families experience the same heartbreak.
WHAT WE ARE DEMANDING
We are calling on the UK Government, product safety regulators, animal welfare organisations, retailers and online marketplaces to:
🐾 Ban rope dog toys that pose an unacceptable risk and investigate whether a wider ban is necessary to protect dogs.
🐾 Launch an urgent, independent investigation into reported deaths, intestinal blockages, injuries and near misses involving swallowed rope fibres.
🐾 Introduce stronger safety testing for dog toys, including testing for fraying, fibre shedding and the dangers of swallowed material.
🐾 Hold sellers and online marketplaces accountable for investigating credible safety complaints and removing or recalling dangerous products where appropriate.
🐾 Introduce clearer warnings so owners understand the potential dangers and can make informed decisions about the toys they buy.
🐾 Create a national reporting system where owners and veterinary professionals can report suspected toy-related injuries and deaths, helping identify patterns and prevent further harm.
CANE’S DEATH MUST MEAN SOMETHING
We buy toys for our dogs because we love them. We want them to play, have fun and enjoy their lives. We should not have to fear that a toy bought for their happiness could end in suffering, emergency surgery or death.
I cannot bring Cane back. No petition can undo what happened to him. But I can speak up, share his story and fight to protect other people’s dogs.
I refuse to let the experiences being shared by grieving owners go unheard.
We are not asking for assumptions or accusations. We are asking for evidence to be investigated, dangerous products to be identified and meaningful action to be taken.
Please sign this petition and share it everywhere you can. If you have experienced a similar incident, your evidence and voice matter too.
Together, we can demand answers, push for stronger protections and help prevent other families from enduring this heartbreak.
FOR CANE. FOR EVERY DOG WE HAVE LOST. FOR EVERY DOG WE STILL HAVE TIME TO PROTECT.
🐾 BAN DANGEROUS ROPE DOG TOYS. INVESTIGATE THE RISKS. PROTECT OUR PETS.
