Threat to Irish Hare is very worrying

Even as Covid 19 ravages our lives, another virus threatens our furry friends in the countryside.
New outbreaks of Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD2) have been confirmed in recent days, with cases identified in counties Clare, Cork, Wexford, and Kildare. This disease is fatal to rabbits and hares and is highly contagious. It killed millions of rabbits in China, decimated part of Spain’s hare population, and caused localised disappearance of hares in many parts of Britain.
The threat to the Irish Hare is particularly worrying. This is a sub-species of the Mountain Hare unique to Ireland, a survivor of the last Ice-Age of 10,000 years ago that may have been around for aeons of time before that. Its demise would be an environmental catastrophe.
Coincidentally, the government is due to decide later this month on whether to issue a license permitting the capture of hares for a new coursing season.
Leaving aside the animal welfare objections to hare coursing, it is imperative from a conservationist standpoint that this license is NOT granted this year because the catching of hares in nets, their transportation in boxes and lengthy confinement in coursing parks have been identified by the National Parks and Wildlife Service to increase the risk of the disease spreading.
The present government has made much of its commitment to safeguarding biodiversity. It has promised to be the greenest government we’ve ever had. As part of an urgent response to the RHD2 outbreaks it must surely, therefore, call off the hare coursing season. To license such an activity in these circumstances ought to be unthinkable.
I hope that concern for the wellbeing - and very survival - of this jewel in the crown of our wildlife heritage will trump party political needs and calculations. It would amount to an act of ecological vandalism if the powerful pro-blood sport lobbyists get the upper hand on this issue and push our native hare to the brink of extinction.
