Ireland’s cruel coursing continues on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with hares running for their lives at meetings in Millstreet, East Donegal, Galway & Oranmore, Templetuohy and Milford.
The hares will be used as live lures in front of a merciless mob who get their kicks from watching the defenceless animals frantically trying to stay ahead of pairs of greyhounds. They will cheer the dogs on and place bets on which dog will force the hare to change direction first.
All of these unfortunate hares will suffer fear and stress, while the hares caught and hit into the ground are at risk of sustaining life-ending internal injuries.
This sick pastime is facilitated by Josepha Madigan, a Minister for Culture and Heritage who, instead of affording every protection to the Irish Hare at a time when fears are growing for the future of the species, opts to pander to the minority of bloodsport enthusiasts who use and abuse wildlife for their amusement. Without the licences issued by Minister Madigan, coursing would not be taking place this week and every week up until the end of February.
She is recklessly allowing coursing to continue despite the presence of the deadly and highly contagious RHD2 virus in Ireland, which has been identified as the cause of deaths of rabbits and hares here. Minister Madigan previously confirmed that the virus “has the potential to wipe out the hare population completely”. Her National Parks and Wildlife Service department warned that RHD2 could prove “catastrophic” for the Irish Hare which is unique to Ireland.
In allowing coursing, the government is disregarding the wishes of the vast majority of citizens. A RED C poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, reveals that a massive 77% agree that the government should BAN HARE COURSING The opinion poll carried out in September found that just 9% disagree with a ban, while 14% said they don't know. Of those stating an opinion, 90% of these agree that the Irish Government should ban hare coursing while 10% disagree with this.
Think of the terrorised hares as they run for their lives on Friday and over the weekend and join us in demanding a ban on this cruel and outdated activity which should have been stopped decades ago.
ACTION ALERT
With warnings from wildlife experts that the Irish Hare is in trouble, it is now more clear than ever that the species must be given FULL PROTECTION - no hare coursing, no hare hunting, no hare shooting. Urgently contact Minister Josepha Madigan and the National Parks and Wildlife Service and demand that they revoke the 2019-20 hare coursing licence and end all forms of hare persecution.

SAMPLE LETTER
(If you have time, please compose your own personal letter. Otherwise, feel free to send the short sample letter below)
Dear Minister Madigan,
I am one of the majority who want hare coursing outlawed. I am writing to demand that you revoke the 2019-20 hare netting licence that has shamefully been issued.
In coursing, hares suffer and die at all stages - during the capture, during the time they are kept in captivity and during the coursing meetings where they run for their lives in front of greyhounds. Among the injuries recorded are broken legs, damaged toes and dislocated hips.
I ask you to please act on the wishes of the majority, show compassion and end this cruelty.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
[Name/Location]
