Ban Cruel Chicken Cages in Rhode Island
This petition had 6,740 supporters
In Rhode Island it’s still legal to keep egg-laying chickens in cages so small they can’t even spread their wings. We have a chance to end this abuse by passing H. 5505, a bill introduced by Representative Pat Serpa. But one legislator, Senator Susan Sosnowski, is blocking it. Please sign my petition asking Senator Sosnowski to stop blocking this important piece of animal protection legislation.
As a family farmer in Foster, RI, I care deeply about how our animals are treated and my daughters do too. Our cows, pigs, and birds all have space to roam, be social, and just be animals. They’re not locked in tiny cages that restrict them from engaging in the most basic of behaviors, which is something I’d never do. It’s cruel, and it’s bad for those family farmers who care about their animals. It’s also bad for consumers because animals kept in cages are more likely to spread disease, like Salmonella or bird flu.
Senator Susan Sosnowski is chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee. In this role she has a duty to improve Rhode Island’s brand of humane and sustainable agriculture, but is continuing to allow the use of cruel cages that are bad for Rhode Island’s family farmers, consumers, and animals.
The vast majority of Rhode Islanders are opposed to locking egg-laying chickens into tiny cages, too. A 2015 survey found that 76 percent of voters agree it should be outlawed, and residents in Senator Sosnowski’s district support the bill at even higher rates (87 percent). Additionally, a coalition of more than 115 family farmers, restaurants and veterinarians endorse the effort.
We can, and must, do better. If you live in Rhode Island, please join me in signing this petition and asking Senator Sosnowski to stop blocking a common sense bill that would protect chickens in the Ocean State. You can also call her at 401-222-4200 and politely ask her to use her position on the Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee to protect animals and family farmers.
