Animal cruelty is a huge issue in Canada, animal testing has been around for thousands of years and is still an ongoing issue. Forty-two countries have banned cosmetic animal testing including the entire 27 countries in the EU, Canada is trailing far behind, and our government has no real plans to ban it yet. In 2021 over 3.5 million animals were reported as being used in cosmetic tests only in Canada, this number is also only from the labs that voluntarily disclosed this data, meaning the real number is likely much higher. It is estimated that globally more than 115 million animals were used in laboratory testing last year. These numbers are continuing to go up, and we need to take civic action. Citizen participation can make a difference and have a great impact on getting one step closer to banning cosmetic animal testing. People are raising awareness, providing information regarding this issue, organizing protests, and sending letters to their government; all of this civic action is helping ban cosmetic animal testing in Canada.
