I have always been a staunch advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. Seeing the care given to dogs in greyhound racing, or lack thereof, has spurred me to take a stand for their rights. It is not just a legal obligation or a movement against an inhumane practice, but something extremely personal and close to my heart.

Commercial greyhound racing, as it currently runs in New Zealand, frequently comes under criticism for the poor well-being and cruelty inflicted upon the racing dogs. These innocent creatures are often subjected to intense physical strain, poorly maintained living conditions and minimal healthcare. Additionally, the Greyhound Racing New Zealand (GRNZ) who is supposed to ensure proper manners in this industry seems to lack transparency regarding these issues. We cannot allow this to continue.

According to the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries, there were over 200 injury incidents reported in the greyhound racing sector in 2020 alone. This clearly outlines the grave dangers these animals face, yet, it is a concern that many more incidents might go unreported or unnoticed.

We as compassionate, responsible citizens of New Zealand, need to push for an outright prohibition of commercial greyhound racing. A step towards protecting the rights of these voiceless beings, asserting our stand against animal cruelty, and demanding transparency from governing bodies such as the GRNZ.
