As an animal lover, it is horrible to think about the 1.8 billion chicks in the UK each year that get killed. These innocent creatures are slaughtered simply because they are male and cannot lay eggs.

 To put that huge number into perspective , it exceeds the total population of China, one of the most populous countries in the world. This practice is just plain cruel.

 This is not an attack on farmers but an attack on large conglomerates that do not care if a few MILLION chicks get killed and then send the money abroad to America or Monaco, meaning this practice is both ethically AND financially unsustainable.

Chick culling is an alarming and largely hidden issue within the chicken industry. Male chicks are deemed obsolete as they do not produce eggs and are not the preferred breed for meat production. Sadly, they are often slaughtered by being ground up alive.

These are clever animals that are as intelligent as a 7-year-old child. We must ensure that animal welfare is a priority in our society, and that means stopping chickens from being massacred by foreign companies based in America or Monaco.

Countries like Germany and France have already taken significant strides by pledging to ban chick culling and investing in alternatives. The UK should follow suit, leading the way in the humane and ethical treatment of animals worldwide. I call on the UK government and large companies to prioritize banning chick slaughter and to support small-scale rather than large companies.
