The unrestricted use of mobile phones during class time is a growing problem that needs to be addressed to ensure that our students at Ballard High can achieve their full potential. Students are constantly tempted by social media, texting, and apps. This leads to reduced focus, lower academic performance, and disengagement from class activities.

Statistics support this concern. Teenager spends more than seven hours per day on screens for entertainment and evidence suggests that the presence of cell phones can disrupt their concentration, impede learning and reduce retention of information. Not to mention the significant mental health impacts. Smartphone overuse is strongly linked to teen anxiety, depression, and cyberbullying

Making the move to ban cell phones during class time at Ballard High School can serve as a proactive measure to promote better study habits, improve classroom engagement, and enhance student focus. Schools around the world, including in the UK and Australia, have seen improved student behavior and academic performance after implementing similar bans.

We urge the administration of Ballard High School to implement a policy banning cell phone use during instructional time. It's imperative for the wellbeing and academic success of our students.

What We’re Asking For:  A clear school-wide policy banning personal cell phone use during instructional time. Required storage of phones in lockers or designated classroom containers during the day. Phones get removed and held in the office until the end of the day if students break the rules. This is not about punishment — it’s about prioritizing the student's well-being, learning, and mental health.
