Butane extraction dominates the cannabis industry because it’s cost-effective, but at what cost? In Denver alone, a $5 billion cannabis market sees roughly 50% of dispensary sales—$2.5 billion annually—from BHO cartridges and distillates, often made with butane . Nationwide, concentrates account for over a third of the $30 billion cannabis industry, with BHO leading the pack . This multibillion-dollar reliance on butane keeps unsafe products on shelves, as producers prioritize profits over purity.

I’ve seen butane’s impact firsthand. In social settings, BHO vapes are passed around, normalized as “safe” because they’re legal, yet many users don’t know the risks. Cheaper BHO floods markets, crowding out cleaner options and harming small producers who prioritize quality. When I’ve spoken out, I’ve faced pushback—industry insiders defend butane, claiming “residual levels are safe” after vacuum purging. But even trace amounts of butane, methacrolein, or benzene (byproducts of terpene degradation) can hurt consumers . Why accept any risk when safer methods like CO2, ethanol, or solventless extraction produce pure, flavorful concentrates without toxic residues?

My vision is a cannabis industry where butane extraction is banned from major facilities and dispensaries, just as it’s excluded from producing foods like potato chips or soda. Consumers would enjoy healthier products, free from chemical solvents. Producers would innovate with cleaner methods, boosting trust and quality. The environment would benefit from less flammable, volatile butane in processing plants. Regulatory bodies like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which oversees alcohol and could regulate cannabis like firearms or fireworks, must act to enforce this ban, replacing outdated Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) oversight as cannabis laws evolve.
