Ban Breed Restrictions in Oakland Rentals

The Issue

Finding dog-friendly housing in Oakland is tough—especially for owners of pit bulls and other working breeds. Breed restrictions in rental units unfairly target these dogs, forcing many into overcrowded shelters and making it nearly impossible for responsible pet owners to find a place to live.

Pit bulls are often mislabeled as aggressive, but research consistently shows that behavior is based on training and environment, not breed. Spaying and neutering can further reduce behavioral concerns, offering peace of mind to landlords.

Breed-specific policies don't work. Studies have shown they don't make communities safer and often punish well-behaved dogs while doing nothing to address irresponsible ownership. Banning dogs based on appearance, rather than behavior, is ineffective and unjust.

Oakland values diversity—our housing policies should reflect that. Let’s end breed discrimination and support responsible pet ownership. Sign the petition to help make our city more inclusive for pets and their people.
