A TD who loves foxes and has a fox tattoo is the latest politician to express support for a ban on cruel fox hunting.
Barry Heneghan TD was among the public representatives who last month supported the introduction to Dail Eireann of Ruth Coppinger TD’s Animal Health & Welfare (Ban On Fox Hunting) Bill.
“I intend to support it the whole way through,” the Independent Dublin Bay North TD promised in a message to the Irish Council Against Blood Sports.
“I’ve always had a personal love for foxes,” Deputy Heneghan stated. “Some of my best childhood memories are of going on walks with my dad to look for them, and I even have a fox tattoo as a reminder of that connection.”
Earlier this year, he was quoted in the Irish Mirror as saying: “I love nature and have always, since a child, been rescuing wildlife.”

In this inherently cruel bloodsport, foxes are chased to exhaustion by packs of dogs and when they slow down and are caught, they are attacked, bitten, disembowelled, pulled apart. Foxes who try to escape underground are dug out with shovels and spades and thrown to the hounds - typically after hunt terriers are sent down the hole to corner and attack them. A ban is long overdue.
On 28 May in Dail Eireann, 49 TDs shamefully attempted to block Ruth Coppinger’s bill but it is set to proceed to second stage after a majority of 113 TDs (including government party TDs) voted in favour of allowing the bill to be introduced. It has been reported that the government TDs plan to oppose the bill at the next stage - please respond to our action alert and help convince all parties to back the bill.
