Fine Gael TD Naoise Ó Muirí is being encouraged to back a ban on cruel fox hunting.
The Dublin Bay North politician was among the 113 TDs who voted in support of the introduction of Ruth Coppinger TD's Animal Health & Welfare (Ban On Fox Hunting) Bill on 28th May.
The bill is set to proceed to second stage but it has been reported that Fine Gael and Fianna Fail TDs plan to oppose the bill at the next stage.
Deputy Ó Muirí has demonstrated in the past that he is someone who has an appreciation and admiration for foxes. In 2023, he tweeted video footage showing “Wilbur the Fox” in Dublin and before that, he posted a video of foxes barking in his area. In 2011, he described as “mighty” a fox seen walking up the middle of a road in County Dublin.
“It is foxes just like Wilbur and the others who are subjected to the most appalling cruelty in fox hunting,” we told Deputy Ó Muirí. “They are chased to exhaustion by packs of dogs and when they slow down and are caught, they are attacked, bitten, disembowelled, pulled apart. Foxes who try to escape underground are dug out with shovels and spades and thrown to the hounds - typically after hunt terriers are sent down the hole to corner and attack them.”
“We hope that when Deputy Coppinger’s bill returns to the Dail, you will recall Wilbur, accept that no fox should have to suffer such cruelty and join other TDs in voting in favour of a ban on fox hunting,” we concluded in our appeal.
