A hare was killed by a vet after suffering injuries at a coursing meeting in Listowel, recently released documents reveal.

The coursing reports published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service  – which shamefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien – show that the hare was caught by dogs, pinned to the ground, retrieved by coursers and examined for injuries. The coursing club's vet, who confirmed the hare was injured, “euthanised” the animal.

The 3-day animal cruelty event took place on 3, 4, 5 November 2023.

On Day 1, 1 hare was hit, 3 hares were pinned and 3 were examined for injuries.
On Day 2, 1 hare was hit. This hare was not examined for injuries.
On Day 3, 2 hares were pinned and examined for injuries, including the one who was killed.

These hares were among 50 captured from the wild (between 22nd September and 14th October), held in captivity for up to 45 days and forced to run for their lives from greyhounds.

Shame on the vet who “certified the hares fit for coursing” and shame on the Irish Government for allowing this obscenity to continue, despite majority support for a ban.

Join us in demanding a long overdue ban on hare coursing

ACTION ALERT

Contact the leaders of government parties Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Green Party. Remind them that a RED C opinion poll has shown that a 77% majority want the government to ban coursing, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban. Tell them that coursing is illegal in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales and it's time for a ban in the Republic.
