A hare who was caught by dogs and pinned to the ground at the Fermoy and Grange coursing meeting died after suffering fatal injuries.
The hare was one of 30 cruelly captured from the wild and used as live bait for dogs to chase at the November 2023 event in County Cork.
Sickening documents published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service – which shamefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien – confirm the death of the hare.
A report from a coursing club vet – who disgracefully “certified the hares fit for coursing” - shows that the hare was examined for injuries, confirmed injured and “died from injuries”.
According to a report submitted by a NPWS wildlife ranger “1 hare died after hitting fence wire”. It is unclear if this is the same hare who died after being caught by the dogs.
In a “hare release” form, the coursers claimed that in addition to 27 hares they say were released on 2nd November, 2 hares were released on 1st November. Elsewhere, however, they say that these two hares were not released but “escaped”.
The NPWS ranger went on to state that the second day of the 2-day meeting was “called off due to weather conditions”.
In contrast, the coursers stated: “final day called off following consultation with Irish Coursing Club reps present due to the nature of coursing that took place on 1st November where the hares did not take the escape at the first time of asking. It was considered that the change in boxing the hares in proximity to the hare park was a likely cause for occurence.” They added that “the back run was water-logged in parts” and “unsuitable”.

Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority public support for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).
