If Fine Gael backs hare coursing, instead of hare protection, they’ll be guilty of betraying an iconic and increasingly vulnerable species – Read John Fitzgerald's Letter to the Editor in the Mail on Sunday...
FG change course...
Letter, Irish Mail on Sunday: July 16th 2023
I’m delighted but surprised to see that Fine Gael MEPs defied the European People’s Party and voted for the Nature Restoration Law.
It's surprising because Fine Gael hasn’t exactly distinguished itself as a champion of wildlife.
In 2019, when the government halted the coursing season over an outbreak of a killer disease fatal to hares, Fine Gael backbenchers kicked up a ferocious racket and forced a government U-Turn.
Perhaps by backing the Nature Restoration Law the party has restored a little of its own dented credibility on ecological issues.
They’ll have a chance in the coming months to demonstrate that it wasn’t just an empty gesture by supporting Deputy Jennifer Whitmore’s Bill to end the capture of hares for coursing.
If they back coursing, instead of hare protection, they’ll be guilty of betraying an iconic and increasingly vulnerable species. They’ll also, I suggest, be on the wrong side of history.
John Fitzgerald,
Callan, Co. Kilkenny
