Two hares were found dead in a box at a coursing meeting in November, recently released documents reveal.
The hares were among 50 netted from the wild for the Thurles and Limerick City coursing meeting held on 18, 19 and 20 November 2022.
On Day 1 of the shameful event, two hares were caught by greyhounds, pinned to the ground, retrieved and later examined for injuries by a vet.
On Day 2, another hare was caught by the dogs and pinned to the ground. A National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger - who was present to monitor the obscenity on Days 2 and 3 - noted that this hare did not receive immediate attention from the vet.
“The hare pinned on Day 2 was placed in a box by a steward and examined by the veterinary surgeon AT THE CONCLUSION OF COURSING,” the ranger wrote. “This hare was returned to the hare park.”
A report from the coursing club's vet showed that two hares died - “2 hares were found dead in their box on Day 3.”
The NPWS ranger sent these hares for post-mortem testing to the Regional Veterinary Lab to determine the cause of death.
The ranger revealed that the “two hares were found dead in boxes in the boxing unit at the start of coursing on day 3.”
Despite the cause of the two deaths being unknown, the coursing was allowed to proceed, with 16 hares subjected to the ordeal of running for their lives on the final day.
No details of the post-mortem results have been published.

Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).
