Six hares were caught by greyhounds and pinned to the ground at a cruel coursing meeting in County Cork, recently published documents reveal.
The hares were among 51 netted from the wild and terrorised at the 3-day Rathcormac Macroom animal cruelty event held on 25, 26 and 27 November 2022.
Documents published on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service – which shamefully licenses the bloodsport on behalf of Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien – show that on each of the three days, two hares were pinned and held in place by dogs before being retrieved and examined for injuries.
Just one of the three days was monitored by a NPWS ranger. Despite the fact that no ranger was present to witness the release of hares after the coursing meeting, the ranger's report presented as a fact that the releases of all the hares had taken place, stating that a coursing “stewart [sic] confirmed that all 51 hares were released”.
The ranger went on to state that the “same number of hares [were] released as far as possible in the same location that they were captured”, despite not being present to personally confirm this.

Shame on the Irish Government for allowing this bloodsport to continue, despite majority support among the public for a ban. A 2019 RED C poll found that 77% want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban. A majority in both rural and urban areas are in favour of a ban.
Due to the cruelty involved, coursing is already illegal in all our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales).
