6 hares were hit by greyhounds during a cruel coursing meeting in Tubbercurry, County Sligo in January.
A National Parks and Wildlife Service monitoring report shows that on Day 1, one hare was hit by dogs, on Day 2, three hares were hit and on Day 3, two hares were hit.
They were among 58 captured, held in captivity and forced to run for their lives at the 13/14/15 January 2023 meeting.
At the end of the meeting, when the hares were being released, the ranger noted that one of the hares had suffered an injury.
“One hare appeared to be lame, its back leg injured and had difficulty running,” the ranger wrote in a report. “I asked whether this hare had received veterinary treatment but was told it hadn’t and that the injury could have occurred in transport from Tubbercurry to XXX [redacted].” See the full report at https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-tubbercurry-2022-2023.pdf
After the ordeal of captivity and coursing, this unfortunate hare, clearly carrying an injury, was released to fend for itself. There is no indication in the NPWS report that any attempt was made to recapture the animal to alleviate its suffering through veterinary treatment.
At last year's 2022 Tubbercurry coursing meeting, seven hares were hit or pinned by greyhounds. One of the hares was “thrown up in the air with its leg in the grip of” a greyhound. A NPWS ranger who monitored the cruelty event reported that the hare’s leg ended up in the mouth of the greyhound after a muzzle “had fallen off” the dog.
This appalling abuse of the Irish Hare must be finally stopped. Taking thousands of hares from their habitats, manhandling them, holding them in captivity and forcing them to run for their lives is unacceptable. A majority in Ireland want this bloodsport banned. Please join us in once again urging the government to take action and bring coursing to an end.
