Cork newspaper The Southern Star has come out in favour of a ban on cruel hare coursing.
The paper commented on coursing after highlighting the recent decision to give basking sharks protected status in Ireland, saying it was “warmly welcomed by many wildlife enthusiasts and ecologists” and noting that “it will now be an offence to hunt them, since they have been awarded ‘protected wild animal’ status under the Wildlife Act.”
The 12 October 2022 editorial headed “Time we emulated UK law” went on to state: “It would also be nice to see our legislators listening to the decades-long calls to protect various other wildlife species, not least of all our beautiful hares, which are still hunted, legally, in this country. Our closest neighbour, Britain, brought in strict new laws in August, for what its government calls the ‘cruel practice’ of hare coursing. Anyone caught hare coursing in the UK will now face an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison. In coursing, thousands of Irish Hares are snatched from the wild, held in captivity for weeks or months and used as live bait for greyhounds to chase. Every coursing season, hares are hit and pinned on coursing fields and suffer painful injuries and die. All the hares suffer the fear and stress of being manhandled, kept in unnatural captivity and forced to run for their lives.
In hare hunting, hares are chased to exhaustion by packs of dogs and when caught, they are attacked and ripped apart.
The continuation of these bloodsports 22 years into the new millennium shames Ireland.
Coursing was outlawed in the UK in 2004 and a ban came into effect in Northern Ireland over a decade ago in 2010. It is banned in most countries around the world and Ireland is one of only three countries in the EU that continue to permit it.
A RED C opinion poll conducted in 2019 found that a 77% majority want coursing banned, with just 9% disagreeing with a ban.
