Joan Collins TD is the latest politician to call on the Minister for Heritage to say NO to another season of cruel hare coursing.
In a Dail Question this week, Deputy Collins (Independents 4 Change) asked Minister Darragh O’Brien “if he will refuse the 2022-2023 coursing licences”
Responding, Minister O’Brien confirmed that his department “has received an application from the Irish Coursing Club for licences to capture and tag hares for the forthcoming 2022/23 hare coursing season”, adding that “this is being considered at present, and a decision will be made on the application in due course.”
He went on to state: “The Irish hare is protected under the Irish Wildlife Acts and can only be captured, tagged or killed under licence. The hare is also listed on Annex V of EU Directive 92/43/EEC (the Habitats Directive) and this listing requires member states to manage the hare sustainably. The Habitats Directive also requires Ireland to make a detailed report every six years on the conservation status of all listed species, including the hare.” See full Q&A at https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/question/2022-06-28/252/#pq_252
Other TDs urging the Minister to refuse the licence are Paul Murphy (People Before Profit-Solidarity), Mick Barry (People Before Profit-Solidarity), Thomas Pringle (Independent) and Cian O’Callaghan (Social Democrats).
“Animals should be treated with respect and dignity and should never be terrorised for the gratification of others,” Deputy O’Callaghan commented.
In a recent Dail Question, Mick Barry TD asked Minister Darragh O’Brien “if he will consider not issuing a licence for the capture of hares for hare coursing given the stress caused to the hares and the risk of spreading of disease among the hares”.
Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan is also calling for an end to cruel hare coursing.
“I will write to the Minister asking him to re-examine this issue of hare coursing and not to allow it,” Senator McGreehan told ICABS.
She previously contacted the Heritage Minister in 2020, telling him “there is no place for hare coursing in a modern Ireland”.
She has also stated: “[Hare coursing] should be banned” and “I personally do not see the sport in this activity”.
Senator David Norris also said he would be contacting Minister O’Brien asking him to refuse a 2022-23 coursing licence.
Senator Norris has in the past condemned hare coursing as “a particularly damnable and degrading pursuit” and “an obscenity which is indefensible”.
The continuation of coursing shames Ireland. A ban is long overdue. All our neighbouring jurisdictions (Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales) have all long since banned it – as have most other civilised nations around the world.
