Not all restrictions should be lifted
Letter, The Avondhu, 3 February 2022
Despite our relief at the ending of most Covid restrictions there’s already a peculiar nostalgia for some of the changes we experienced during lockdown. Working from home is the main one, but there’s also our reconnection with nature: the simple joys many of us discovered when we took to the country roads.
Flora and fauna, so long almost invisible to us in the helter-skelter of 21st century living, made a welcome return to our lives as we found time to appreciate birds singing, rabbits darting across verdant meadows, and lush floral scenes of the kind that would have had Wordsworth reaching for his pen.
Covid also meant a respite for our precious biodiversity, badly needed as the Doomsday Clock edges closer to midnight. Among the animals accorded a long overdue rest from man’s destructive proclivities was the Irish Hare.
For the first time in decades, the ghoulish practice of snatching these harmless creatures from their habitat for use as live bait was called off. For a few months coursing was suspended and “sportspeople” couldn’t savour the spectacle of hares being hounded, mauled or tossed about on muddy fields throughout Ireland.
Hares instead ran free in the countryside, and walkers, some for the first time ever, spotted them frolicking in the greenery, or on mountains or hillsides.
Sadly, the lifting of restrictions also signalled the resumption of a “sport” that necessitates the abuse of an animal that threatens nobody and graces our natural environment.
This weekend, hares will perform for thousands of gamblers at the National Coursing Festival in Clonmel. Even ones that emerge physically unscathed from the ordeal will have to contend with the effects of stress-related conditions to which they are susceptible. What a way to treat this jewel in the crown of our wildlife heritage.
So, while I share in the joy of freedom from restrictions, I wish we could retain the ban on hare coursing, a practice that belongs in permanent lockdown.
John Fitzgerald,
Callan, Co Kilkenny
ACTION ALERT
With a RED C opinion poll confirming that a 77 per cent majority of citizens want hare coursing banned (with just 9% disagreeing with a ban), it is now time for politicians to consign this nasty bloodsport to history. Join us in contacting all TDs and urging them to act to ensure that a ban is urgently introduced. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
Urge Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tanaiste Leo Varadkar to respect the wishes of the majority and ban hare coursing and all bloodsports.
