Paul Murphy TD has hailed the upcoming ban on fur farming as “a victory of campaigning” and urged members of the public to put pressure on politicians to follow it up with a ban on cruel hare coursing.
Speaking on 15 December 2021 during a Dail debate on the Animal Health and Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021, Deputy Murphy stated: “This is a victory of campaigning. It is a consequence of the campaigning by the National Animal Rights Association, by the Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as statements from Veterinary Ireland and many other campaigning organisations [including ICABS which campaigned for a ban for 20+ years]. This came about as a direct consequence of a Bill put forward by Solidarity-People Before Profit to ban fur farming. That pushed the Government, together with the campaigning from outside the Dail, to move to impact this measure. It shows we can win when we campaign.”
Turning his attention to hare coursing, the Dublin South West, Solidarity-People Before Profit TD said that “the next emerging issue in terms of animal rights in this country is going to be the Bill, which will be moved at Second Stage next year, to ban hare coursing, to ban this cruel practice that leads to unnecessary tens of deaths of hares every year, unnecessary injuries and maulings of hundreds of hares every year when hare coursing is taking place. It is a practice which has no support from the public. 77% of people agree with banning it.”
Addressing government coalition partner The Green Party, he asked “are you going to go against your long-term policy of supporting a ban on hare coursing to back up your partners in Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael and vote against a ban?”
He noted that the Labour Party “likes to talk from time to time about animal rights but has still not given a commitment to support [a ban on coursing]” and that a motion seeking a reversal of Sinn Féin’s current pro-coursing stance “got taken off the agenda” of the party’s recent Ard Fheis.
He went on to criticise Sinn Fein, saying that “those who have been watching what happened in the North in relation to the motion on fox hunting will maybe not be feeling very optimistic”.
In the Northern Ireland Assembly on 6 December 2021, 25 Sinn Fein MLAs voted against a ban on foxhunting in the North, ensuring that the anti-bloodsports bill was defeated. This despite party president Mary Lou McDonald last year assuring ICABS that “Sinn Fein is opposed to foxhunting and will vote in favour of a ban at the next opportunity”.
He branded as nonsensical a statement from Sinn Fein TD Matt Carthy on RTE Radio 1 this week in which he outrageously presented “protection of biodiversity” as a justification for rejecting a ban on the barbaric bloodsport which involves releasing a pack of hounds to chase a fox to exhaustion before the unfortunate animal is caught, attacked, bitten, disembowelled and pulled apart.
“Animal rights campaigners and members within Sinn Féin who support a ban on hare coursing should put pressure on the party leadership and tell them not to be on the wrong side of history on this issue,” Deputy Murphy concluded. “Support a ban on hare coursing when it comes before the Dail next year.”
