There are renewed calls on the government to ban all hare coursing after it emerged that three hares were killed on the first day of a coursing meeting in Loughrea last month.
The deaths led to the meet being stopped and the club’s netting licence suspended.
In a Dail Question this week, Paul Murphy TD (Solidarity-People Before Profit) questioned Heritage Minister Darragh O'Brien about the coursing meeting and the hare deaths.
“Officials from my Department were present at the meeting of 15 October 2021,” Minister O’Brien stated. “Three hares died during the course of the first day of the meeting. A post mortem was carried out on the three hares by Athlone Regional Veterinary laboratory on Monday 18 October 2021. The netting licence for this club was immediately and indefinitely suspended pending a full investigation of this matter, which is ongoing.”
The cause of the deaths is not currently known. Minister O’Brien was specifically asked for the results of the post-mortems but he did not provide the details. ICABS is calling on him to immediately release the details.
It is understood that despite the meeting being stopped, the Loughrea club’s coursing resumed the following week after it was accommodated at a different field by another coursing club.
Minister O’Brien was asked about this and said that “my officials were not informed by the club concerned of any alternative arrangements for the stakes that were due to be run by the club during their own meeting.”
Asked about the health of the remaining hares at the Loughrea meet, Minister O’Brien said that they have since been released and “appeared to be in good health”.
It remains unknown why the meeting was suddenly halted, given the fact that hare deaths are sadly not unusual in this cruel bloodsport. We can only conclude that there was a very serious associated issue at Loughrea, which the Minister is not divulging.
Hares are continuing to suffer and die on coursing fields around Ireland because the government is shamefully refusing to act on the wishes of the majority who want this cruel bloodsport made illegal. A RED C opinion poll has shown that 77% want the government to ban coursing, while just 9 per cent want it to continue.
Previously at Loughrea coursing meetings, hares have been hit and mauled by dogs. In 2017, 20 hares were hit or pinned and a NPWS ranger reported that he was told that one hare died and “was buried”. Another year, a hare was put down as a result of injuries, with a ranger querying how this was done as there was no veterinary involvement. How many more hares have to suffer and die before the government finally outlaws this bloodsport which should have been ended decades ago? It’s outrageous that in 2021, thousands of hares are still snatched from the countryside and used as live bait for dogs to chase.
