Solidarity-People Before Profit TD Mick Barry has asked the Minister for Agriculture about “the banning of hare coursing given the cruel nature of the practice”.
In a 21 October 2021 Dail Question, the Cork North Central TD also mentioned “the protected nature of the hare” - a so-called “protection” which sadly does not save hares from coursers who are allowed to proceed with their cruelty thanks to annual licences from Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
In his response, Minister Charlie McConalogue - who has responsibility for animal welfare legislation - farcically referred to coursers considering the welfare of the hares they snatch from the wild, hold in captivity for weeks/months and force to run for their lives in front of pairs of greyhounds.
“I believe that it is critically important that those involved in coursing operate in accordance with the regulatory framework and that the welfare of both hares and greyhounds is at the forefront at all times,” Minister McConalogue stated, adding “I have no plans at present to alter this arrangement.”
The Minister is refusing to back a ban on this inherently cruel bloodsport despite a RED C opinion poll clearly showing that a majority of citizens in both rural and urban areas it banned. The September 2019 poll found that 77% agree that the government should ban hare coursing, with just 9% against a ban.
ACTION ALERT
Urge Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Malcolm Noonan to REVOKE the coursing licences and give Irish Hares the proper protection they deserve.
