Politicians endangering our biodiversity

Dear Editor,
The global biodiversity crisis is worsening and Ireland hasn’t distinguished itself in the battle to save the planet.
Or rather, I should say, our politicians have not, because it is they who bore a huge responsibility for the sorry state of so many of our wildlife species and their precious habitats.
Political inaction over decades precipitated the puffins of Skellig and the once abundant curlew onto the threatened list. The curlew’s plaintive call was once a familiar part of country life. Today it’s as rare as a straight-talking politician.
77 animal and plant species here are endangered. Habitats, upon which several species depend for their survival, including blanket bogs, are under severe threat.
Neglect of our priceless biodiversity is bad enough, but when our leaders allow reckless and completely unjustified killing or disturbance of already vulnerable species they require a healthy dose of accountability.
Birds are classified as green, amber or red to denote the degree of their vulnerability in conservationist terms. Animal protection and environmentalist campaigners pleaded with the government to remove red and amber listed birds from the Open Seasons Order that permits shooting of specified wild creatures.
To no avail: Since September 1st, Snipe and Scaup, which have moved from amber to red status, were being shot for sport nationwide; this despite the fact that breeding populations of snipe are now in severe decline. They may be shot until January 31st.
Red-listed Pochard and Goldeneye, which have undergone severe declines in their wintering populations, can be shot over the same period. Red-listed Woodcock can be shot between 1st November and January 31st.
Mallards, whose status has gone from green to amber, can be killed up to January 31st. Red-listed Red Grouse is fair game for the whole month of September.
Teal, Gadwall, Wigeon, Pintail, Tufted Duck and Greylag Goose, all amber-listed, may also be shot.
The conservation status of these avian species seems to count for nothing in the corridors of power, with politicians continuing to appease the powerful blood sports lobby. Votes trump conservation every time.
The Irish Hare has been in decline for the past half century. Loss of habitat resulting from urbanisation, and the unintended effects of modern agriculture; have contributed to its plight, but so also has the legal “sport” of coursing.
Apart from disturbance to habitat caused by widespread trapping, and stress-related ailments resulting from prolonged and unnatural captivity, there is now the added threat posed by outbreaks of the deadly RHD2 virus in the countryside, which is highly contagious and fatal to hares. It can be spread by the use of nets to capture hares.
A temporary ban on coursing to help prevent contagion was lifted in response to a ferocious lobbying campaign by coursing clubs and their political allies.
Again, calculations of potential electoral loss if the hare remained protected led to the resumption of an activity that, in this instance, was not only cruel but also posed an existential threat to the Irish Hare as a species.
If politicians can do this to one of our truly native mammals, the very symbol of Irish biodiversity, what hope is there for the future of Ireland’s endangered bird and animal species?
It’s political climate change we need in the battle to save our little patch of the planet.

Contact Ministers Darragh O’Brien and Malcolm Noonan and demand that they stop the shooting of birds – or, at the very least, immediately remove the red- and amber-list birds from the open season order. Encourage them to give full protection to all Irish birds.
