Members of a coursing club which has been terrorising hares for years are reportedly “OUTRAGED” after videos emerged online showing a dog being released onto its field to chase a hare.
The Kerryman reported this week that “members of Listowel Coursing Club were left outraged after a number of videos went 'viral' on social media at the weekend showing people releasing an unmuzzled dog after a live hare on the club's grounds.”
According to the Kerryman, an unnamed spokesperson for the coursing club claimed that those filmed releasing the hare were “trespassing on the club's grounds and have nothing whatsoever to do with coursing in Listowel”.
The spokesperson said that members of the club - which hosts meets every year at which hares are released in front of dogs to run for their lives - were “deeply sickened and upset”.
“In one of the videos, a man who is clearly identifiable in profile, is seen throwing a hare onto the track at the club before a second person, out of shot, releases the unmuzzled hound after the terrified creature,” the Kerryman report added.
Over the years during Listowel coursing meetings, hares have been terrorised, injured and killed.
At one meet, three hares "required assistance" (meaning they were hit/mauled by greyhounds), 1 was certified injured and 1 was put down because of injuries.
Another year, 9 hares were hit by greyhounds, 1 was injured, 3 were killed and 1 went “missing” The previous year at Listowel, 7 hares were hit by greyhounds, 3 were killed, 3 were injured and 2 were put down because of injuries. Another hare died in the coursing compound. At its meeting in 2018, 3 hares were pinned to the ground by dogs and examined by a vet for injuries. Two hares died from so-called “natural causes”. In 2019, two hares were pinned to the ground and examined for injuries.
ICABS has brought this latest disturbing incident to the attention of the National Parks and Wildlife Service and urged them to investigate. The origin of hare(s) in the videos is unknown. The footage emerged two weeks after Heritage Minister Darragh O’Brien announced that “the Irish Coursing Club has informed my Department that all hares currently held in captivity by coursing clubs will be released forthwith”.
