Thank you to Wicklow County Councillor, Dr Mags Crean, for becoming the latest politician to express support for a ban on hare coursing.
“Please be assured that I fully support campaigns to ban cruel hare coursing,” Cllr Crean told ICABS this week.
She joins a growing list of Councillors/TDs/Senators who want the bloodsport banned, including other members of Wicklow County Council:
Cllr Erika Doyle (Green Party) - “I completely and utterly oppose animal cruelty and bloodsports of any description.”
Cllr Tom Fortune (Independent) - “You have my support calling on the Heritage Minister, Malcolm Noonan, to refuse a 2020-2021 licence for cruel hare coursing.”
Cllr Mary Kavanagh (Independent) - “I would support a ban on hare coursing and fox hunting. I consider these activities cause unnecessary cruelty and suffering to animals...I would love to see hare coursing banned in Ireland. It’s a crude and cruel “sport”. No animal should have to suffer for the entertainment of humans.”
Cllr Gerry O’Neill (Independent) - “I am totally against both hare coursing and foxhunting”
Cllr Lourda Scott (Green Party) - “I have written to Minister Malcolm Noonan asking that issuing of hare coursing licenses be suspended until the prevalence of RHD2 is known.”
Cllr Gerry Walsh (Fianna Fail) - “I would not condone these types of activity [hare coursing and foxhunting].”
With a RED C opinion poll confirming that a 77 per cent majority of Irish citizens want hare coursing banned (with just 9% wanting it to continue), it is now time for politicians to consign this nasty bloodsport to history.
