The government’s newly launched animal welfare strategy for the next five years contains no mention of a ban on cruel hare coursing or foxhunting, ICABS is disgusted to learn.
Announcing “Ireland’s Animal Welfare Strategy 2021-2025” on 1st February, Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue claimed that the strategy - which excludes a ban on some of Ireland worst acts of cruelty to animals - “reflects this government’s clear commitment to animal welfare”.
“Irish people have a strong sense of empathy and responsibility towards animals and my Department has a proud history of supporting the welfare of animals,” Minister McConalogue added. “Animal welfare is increasingly important to Irish citizens. We are ever more aware of the interrelationship between the welfare of animals and human well-being.”
“When asked, Irish citizens say that animal welfare is increasingly important to them,” the Minister wrote in a foreword in the strategy document.
Despite failing to commit to a ban on obscene cruelty to Irish wildlife, Minister McConalogue outrageously declared that “Together, we can ensure that as a society, we afford our companion, farmed and WILD ANIMALS, the respect, care and high welfare standards they deserve.”
Irish hares and foxes deserve respect, care and high welfare standards. They deserve to live free from persecution and appalling acts of cruelty. But Minister McConalogue and his colleagues in government are so far refusing to commit to banning hare coursing and fox hunting.
They are disregarding the views of the 77 per cent of Irish citizens who want coursing and fox hunting ended. A RED C opinion poll found that while the majority want the bloodsports banned, just 9 per cent want coursing to continue and 12 per cent fox hunting.
The government must act on the majority view that bloodsports have no place in modern Ireland. Please join us in demanding a ban on hare coursing and foxhunting.
