Alliance Party MLA, John Blair plans to use a Private Members Bill to ban the hunting of wild mammals with dogs in Northern Ireland. The Bill, if passed, would also ban trail hunting and effectively outlaw ‘terrier work’.
The latest opinion poll confirms that a majority in Northern Ireland want hunting with dogs banned. The 2019 Survation poll found that
- 76% want fox hunting with dogs banned
- 84% want deer hunting with dogs banned
- 76% want hare hunting with dogs banned
- 74% want rabbit hunting with dogs banned
- 76% want terrier work banned
John Blair MLA also points out that there is strong support from the farming community to have hunting with dogs banned.
"Local hunts have been accused of trespass, damaging boundary fencing/hedging, livestock worrying, damage to land/pastures/crops and anti-social behaviour," he states. "Research shows that mounted hunting with dogs also present a significant biosecurity threat to livestock when hunts trample from one farm to another, potentially spreading disease."
