There are renewed calls on Heritage Minister Malcolm Noonan to REFUSE A 2020-21 COURSING LICENCE, following a report in TheJournal.ie today that "suspected cases of a deadly virus found in rabbits and hares have been identified in a number of counties across Leinster and Munster" https://jrnl.ie/5148904 The RHD2 virus can be spread on nets and boxes used by cruel coursers
Minister Noonan (Green Party, Carlow Kilkenny) - who has responsibility for the National Parks and Wildlife Service - has confirmed that a licence for another season of cruel coursing has been received and he is currently considering it. Speaking during the Green Party’s “Our Environment and How We Protect It” online public meeting last week, Minister Noonan branded the bloodsport “a cruel practice” and said “we all want to see hare coursing ended.”
Last September, on RTE’s Morning Ireland, Dr Ferdia Marnell, Head of Animal Ecology at the National Parks and Wildlife Service confirmed that the highly infectious RHD2 disease which the NPWS warned could prove “catastrophic” for hares, can be spread on "nets and boxes".
“Unusually with this version of the disease - some animals survive and that, in some way, gives us more concerns because then you may have animals carrying the disease that don’t apparently have any symptoms,” he stated. “And that is one of the reasons that we have taken the step of not issuing the coursing licence this year because the risk associated with bringing hares together from various areas and keeping them in a park was considered to be too high a risk to take particularly given that some of those animals could actually be carrying the disease unawares to the coursers.”
The coursing licence was temporarily suspended last year, with the then Culture and Heritage Minister, Josepha Madigan acknowledging that RHD2 “has the potential to wipe out the hare population completely”. Regardless, she recklessly lifted the suspension and allowed the coursers to net thousands of hares for their bloodsport. This followed a meeting between Minister Madigan and pro-coursing Fine Gael TDs/Senators.

With a RED C opinion poll confirming that a 77 per cent majority of Irish citizens want hare coursing banned (with just 9 per cent disagreeing with a ban), it is now time for politicians to consign this nasty bloodsport to history. Join us in contacting all TDs and demanding that they act to ensure that a ban is urgently introduced. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
