The Green Party’s support for a Programme for Government that doesn’t include a pledge to ban cruel hare coursing and live exports was discussed on The Tonight Show on Virgin Media 1 last night (18 June 2020).
Programme presenter, Ivan Yates noted that the Greens did not secure agreement on “animal welfare, animal rights, live exports”.
Responding, environmental scientist and former Green Party election candidate, Dr Cara Augustenborg said that “having heard some of the comments coming out of the [Green Party] convention, they were very disappointed they didn’t achieve the live export [ban] in particular”, adding that “in negotiations, you’re not going to win everything”.
Challenging this, Paul Murphy TD (RISE, Solidarity) - who is calling on Green Party members to vote against entering government with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael - declared that “you can win things from not being in government”.
“Look at the wins that happened on animal welfare over the course of the last government term,” he said. “You had a very right wing government. You had a very right wing Minister for Agriculture but we had two important wins. One was a banning of wild animals in circuses and the other was in terms of fur farming [a pledge by the government to phase it out]. They were won from the outside. They were bills that the left brought forward and were backed up by public pressure.”

2,627 members of the Green Party registered to receive a vote on the programme for government. Those who have been a member for at least six months will be eligible to cast a vote. A two-thirds majority of Green Party member votes is required for the party to enter coalition with Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.

GREENS CAPITULATE ON ANIMAL CRUELTY: There is to be no let-up of the horrific abuse meted out to Ireland’s hares and foxes, following weeks of talks between Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Green party, with not a mention of bloodsports issues in the Programme for Government https://www.facebook.com/banbloodsports/posts/3002648016517403
ACTION ALERT
In April, Paul Murphy TD announced his intention to introduce a new bill which will attempt to finally ban cruel hare coursing in Ireland. In a video posted on Facebook, he said that he is confident that “the bill will achieve what we’re setting out to do which is to ban this cruel practice from Ireland.” https://www.facebook.com/paulmurphytd/videos/542155243391892/
Please contact all the political parties and TDs and urge them to pledge support for Paul Murphy’s bill to ban hare coursing. Remind them that a RED C opinion poll in September confirmed that a 77 per majority of Irish citizens want the government to ban hare coursing, with just 9 per cent disagreeing with a ban.
