The Irish Examiner is reporting that Fine Gael and the Green Party are clashing over a ban on cruel bloodsports in the ongoing government formation talks.

“There are clashes over the banning of bloodsports, in particular hare coursing,” the Examiner reported yesterday. “The Greens are opposed to the practice while Fine Gael rural politicians warn any ban could be a thin wedge in moves to eradicate other blood sports.”

The report quoted an unidentified Fine Gael source as saying: "That [the ban] is not going to happen."

In shamefully resisting agreement on a ban, Fine Gael is disrespecting the majority of Irish citizens who want cruel foxhunting and hare coursing outlawed. A RED C opinion poll carried out in September showed that a 77 per cent majority wants the government to ban foxhunting and hare coursing. The poll found that a mere 9 per cent disagree with a ban on coursing and just 12 per cent disagree with a ban on foxhunting.

Fine Gael should not hesitate to introduce a long overdue ban on these cruel activities which shame Ireland and cause so much suffering and death to wildlife.

Please urgently contact Fine Gael leader, Leo Varadkar, and ALL party TDs and urge them to include a ban on bloodsports in the Programme for Government.Tell them that their stance on bloodsports and other animal cruelty issues will affect your future voting decisions.
