“I have always great respect for foxes, perhaps more than for some of the people who chase them” - the Sunday Independent’s Motoring Editor Campbell Spray in his column at the weekend.

Mr Spray, a former executive editor of the newspaper, recounted recent sighting of foxes, including one he spotted playing on a football pitch near his home.

“There are many sightings of foxes around Dublin during the Covid restrictions with emptier streets and some of their normal food supplies disappearing,” he wrote.

“I saw my first dead fox for sometime on the Navan Road last Sunday,” he added. “It made me very sad and I hope it wasn't another victim of the awful speeding that is going on, despite the gardai's attempt to control it. The amount of car accidents and deaths - especially among pedestrians - has been frightening during a time when we are meant to be staying at home, looking after ourselves and not putting additional burdens on health and emergency services.”

Read Campbell Spray’s column every weekend in the Sunday Independent.

ICABS ACTION ALERT

Please join us in urging politicians to save foxes from foxhunting cruelty by banning the bloodsport. Foxhunting is completely unacceptable in modern Ireland and a majority want it stopped. A RED C opinion poll, commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports, shows that a 77% majority agree that the Irish Government should ban foxhunting. The poll found that just 12 per cent disagree with a ban on foxhunting.

Contact all your local TDs and urge them to push for a ban on foxhunting. Visit the Oireachtas website for names of TDs and their email addresses http://www.oireachtas.ie/members-hist/default.asp?housetype=0&HouseNum=33&disp=mem

Contact the leaders of Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Sinn Fein, Labour Party and the Green Party to tell them that you want fox hunting and all bloodsports banned.
