More hare deaths have come to light this week with the publication of additional coursing reports on the website of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (which shamefully licenses the cruel activity).
On day 2 of the 3-day Lixnaw, County Kerry coursing meeting (Dec 1st), one hare was pinned to the ground “held by muzzled greyhounds, retrieved by a hare steward and examined by vet”.
According to a veterinary report, this hare was confirmed injured and died as a result of the injuries.
The following day at the Bandon and Carey’s Cross coursing meeting, a hare was similarly pinned to the ground by greyhounds and examined by a vet. The vet confirmed that the hare was injured and noted that the unfortunate animal “died from injuries” https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-bandon-careys-cross-2018-19.pdf
These are just the latest hare coursing deaths. Last month, for example, we highlighted a hare who suffered a "broken leg" and was destroyed by a vet at a coursing meeting in Cork. Sickening documents, published by the NPWS showed that at the 2-day Rathcormac coursing meeting in November, the hare was caught and pinned to the ground by dogs. A coursing club vet in attendance confirmed that the hare suffered a broken leg and was euthanised. https://www.npws.ie/sites/default/files/files/coursing-rathcormac-2018-19.pdf

The Irish Hare is a protected species but an exemption for coursing in the Animal Health and Welfare Act means coursers are not liable for prosecution for their cruelty. Join us in our call to the government to remove the exemption and provide full and permanent protection to this cherished species.
Contact An Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar and ask him to ban hare coursing and give permanent protection to hares.
