The Issue
I have personally witnessed the introduction of bioengineered foods and ingredients into everyday products that we consume. The long-term effects of these unnatural substances on human cells, organs, and DNA remain unknown. This uncertainty is alarming, especially considering that these items are becoming increasingly prevalent in our diets.
Bioengineered foods are created by altering the genetic makeup of plants or animals to achieve desired traits such as resistance to pests or improved nutritional content. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the potential health impacts of consuming these genetically modified organisms (GMOs). According to a report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in 2016, while no substantiated evidence was found indicating that GMOs were riskier than conventional food in terms of human health effects, they also acknowledged that long-term epidemiological studies have not been conducted to confirm this conclusion.
Given this uncertainty around bioengineered foods' safety and their increasing prevalence in supermarkets and food stores across our country - it's time for us to act. We must demand stricter regulations on bioengineered foods until conclusive scientific evidence can prove their safety for consumption.
