The Issue

Hi we’re two thirteen year olds in Colorado. We have both always loved animals. Recently it came to our attention that bear traps  are still legal and actively used in our state. We’ve decided that we need change. So we are calling for a complete ban on bear traps in Colorado.

Bear traps are not only barbaric, but also indiscriminate. They capture any creature unfortunate enough to step on them, from endangered species to our pets. Such traps, with their powerful, jaw-like mechanism, cause immeasurable suffering, often resulting in a slow, painful death for the trapped animal. Scientific studies and wildlife experts confirm that these traps are outdated and unnecessary, especially as there are far more humane and effective methods of managing wildlife.

Colorado’s rich tapestry of wildlife is at risk, and we have a responsibility to protect it. Many states across the U.S. have already banned or severely restricted the use of these traps due to their cruel nature and the risk they pose to non-target animals. By banning bear traps in Colorado, we become part of a growing movement towards more ethical and sustainable wildlife management practices.

Furthermore, the economic impact of these traps cannot be undermined. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, outdoor activities, including wildlife watching, generate over $62 billion annually in our state alone. A ban would signal to the world that Colorado stands for humane treatment of animals, preserving its image as a premier destination for nature lovers.

The evidence and our conscience urge us to act. We must join together to ask our lawmakers to lead the charge in protecting our wildlife and pets from unnecessary suffering. Encourage humane alternatives that ensure the coexistence of humans and wildlife, respecting the natural balance that defines Colorado.

Please join me in urging the Colorado state legislature to ban bear traps. Sign this petition to protect our wildlife and promote humane treatment of all living creatures. Together, we can make Colorado a model of compassion and conservation.
